Agricultural Sectors Past and Present

main objectives

This module is a part of the first Semester IL3 unit ‘The Farming Environment’: Understand farming operations in their context, most notably the historic and geographic contexts in relation to this module.,A mix of issues and farming systems on several continents will be covered. Students will be introduced to multi-disciplinary methods (history, sociology, geography, economics, engineering/science and technology) used in comparative agriculture. A focus will be also made on the historical approach in order to understand the main process underlying existence of several types of agrarian systems.,Detailed Objectives are: ,- To understand the large contemporary farming systems in different areas of the world: crop or livestock farming systems, and different types of production, i.e. familial or business farms,- To know how to analyse differences between these systems, using an analysis framework based on physical and human geography, history, analysis of technical systems,- To take into account agricultural diversity and local development issues in future professional activities,- To use a historical perspective (recent history) and projection into the future, understanding what a historical viewpoint can provide,- To learn about the main historical agrarian/farming systems and consider the main factors in the evolution of these systems (i.e. the approaches of Mazoyer and Jared Diamond),

7 Lectures (CM) + 4 Seminars (TD) + 3 Accompanied Work (TA),,2 introductory Lectures (CM) to understand the concepts of the agrarian system and dynamic of agrarian systems through examples of historical evolution of main agrarian (farming) systems in the world. Work by Mazoyer and Jared Diamond will be brought together for this introduction.,4 Lectures (CM) will introduce the agricultural issues and contexts of 4 main world regions: Europe, West Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, The Maghreb (region of NW Africa). ,Seminars (TD) will use analysis examples of agrarian systems carried out on small territories/regions located in 4 main world regions: The Sahel (region), The Maghreb, Southeast Asia, South America,2 Accompanied Work projects (TA) development of a historical approach based on an example of French agriculture between 1950 and 1990. These 3 Accompanied Work projects will be made up of watching a film followed by a Workshop/debate.,

evaluation

Work done as a group on agrarian/farming systems of small French territories/regions. The guidelines for this work done as a group will be given during a session of Accompanied Work (TA) for the entire degree class. Individual evaluation will consist of a synthesis redaction exercise.
