Overview
Our research unit studies the influence of human activity on biodiversity from different viewpoints and at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. The objective is to understand how biodiversity and ecological functions can be favoured and renewed in rural and urban landscapes.
Research is organised around three main topics :
- Cultivated biodiversity in organic food systems
- Spontaneous biodiversity and ecological functions of landscape features
- Spontaneous biodiversity and ecological functions of landscapes and regions
The research unit is composed of 14 researchers, lecturer and research assistants, around ten technical and administrative support staff and hosts several doctoral students (8 in 2022). Team members are distributed between Rennes and Angers and three institutions (INRAE, Institut agro and ESA). The team is pluri-disciplinary, composed of ecologists, agronomists, animal scientists, social scientists and is skilled in GIS and modelling.

Study programmes
BAGAP lecturers are involved in teaching Bachelor and Master’s level courses in applied ecology, agroecology and environment. Subjects taught are basic ecology, landscape ecology, nature conservation and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
The Unit welcomes interns for 1st or 2nd year Masters projects. Internships are part of ongoing research projects and receive guidance and supervision from the team. For example, recently the unit hosted a 2nd year Masters intern as part of a research project on the following topic: “How can biodiversity protection issues be integrated into eco-design approaches to accompany agro-ecological transitions in viticulture ?”.
