Environmental management tools
main objectives
The general objective is to learn how to manage resources utilised in human activities in a sustainable manner. You will learn how to assess the environmental impacts of an activity, a project, a product or a service using a variety of environmental impact assessment methods and will learn how to propose improvements, either organisational or technological, traditional or innovative, if possible through eco-design which aims to integrate sustainability from the start. You will also learn how to implement and finalise an environmental management system certification.

Sustainability definitions and challenges.,Presentation and comparison of different environmental assessment methods: environmental impact assessment, carbon footprint, indicators of sustainability at farm level, Life Cycle Analysis, environmental footprint.,Organisation of production while respecting environmental obligations (creation, monitoring and control). Broad-based approach for sustainable techniques and management of water, energy, waste, species and habitats and pollution. Learning about resources and flow of resources (matter and energy) within a geographical area (administrative area, river basin, natural area).,Implementation of an Environmental Management System. Use of best available techniques, eco-design and different forms of innovation (incremental, breakthrough, frugal, low-tech, circular economy). Environmentally friendly development.,,

Lectures (sometimes requiring preparatory work), professional speakers, case studies, visits, groupwork for mini-projects.
evaluation
Continuous assessment. Oral and written presentations (e.g. presentation of a project folder including design, modelling or provisional budget / thematic literature review / prospective thinking / write-up of visit or interview. Online self-assessment via multiple choice questions or quiz.
