Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

main objectives

The objective of this course is to learn the basics of geomatics in order to be able to continue independently learning the methods and functions developed in the field of Geographical Information Systems. ,You will be introduced to some of the diversity of available data, in particular freely accessible geographical and socioeconomical datasets, and will use them to analyse and describe a given territory. ,The activities and approaches offered in this module also aim to reinforce student autonomy. ,

general content

Learning to use the basic functions of GIS with QGis freeware: creating a GIS project, georeferencing, geocoding, spatial analysis, integrating statistical data, digitising, map production. Other software will be demonstrated and occasionally used (ArcGIS, Idrisi…),Introduction to remote sensing and satellite imagery: physical principles, image and sensor characteristics, calculating metrics from multispectral images using QGis.,Mapping: general rules for map publishing and their application for a specific example.,Examples of the applications of GIS for research, in industry or by local authorities. ,Carrying out a group project. ,

pedagogy

Lectures but mostly practical work accompanied by teachers. Individual study (reading, writing) and the group project work. All the practical work is done in an allocated computer room.
