This module introduces students to the development and adoption of precision farming, applied to viticulture. Precision farming is a data-driven approach that enables winegrowers the ability to target site specific management strategies within their vineyards. Introduction: Origin of vineyard variability Traditional approaches to vineyard variability: site selection and zoning. ,Precision farming: Definition of precision viticulture. Drivers of vineyard variation Spatial variation in vine vigour, grape yield and fruit composition.,Monitoring variability: Remote sensing platforms and different resolutions. Proximal sensing tools for monitoring of soil, canopy, yield and fruit composition. Vegetation indices and vigour maps.,Prescription maps: Variable-rate applications in the vineyard: fertilization, leaf-removal, selective harvesting. How robotics can assist vineyard management.
